Friday is here. In the hour when our car should have been driving in the qualifier, it was still in the tent. But the staff who delivered breakfast for the mechanics working straight through the night were in for a surprise.

The circuit called the Nürburgring consists of two parts; a 5.1km GP course where the F1 race is held, and a 20.832km north course (Nordschleife). To most of the world, the Nürburgring generally refers to the north course that is known as being the holy ground of automotive development. Its length of 20 kilometers per lap is longer than a full circle around Tokyo on the Japanese urban highway. When you compare the farthest points, the Shibaura junction would be around where the Flugplatz is, and the Hakozaki junction would be around where the carousel is. If you’ve been on the Tokyo highways you’d realize how incredibly expansive that is.

The intake and exhaust sound of a car always sounds best at the engine’s full open, fully loaded condition (under full acceleration) in its power band. (Recently there have been cars that are tuned to sound the best under load conditions encountered in daily use, before the full open/fully loaded state. A good example of this are cars like the Lexus LFA and the Ferrari 458). All “drivers” know, that engines sound the best when the car is at full throttle under load of acceleration, in its power band, when the airflow through the engine is the greatest; when the engine is “flat out”. Our 7th year challenging the Nürburgring 24 hour race. We develop the car through participation in the VLN Endurance Series starting in and around March every year, and the annual 24 hour race is our main objective. The front lines of this battlefield has provided a great contribution to the game development of Gran Turismo, as a testing ground for a variety of factors involved in building a racing car.

On the other hand, the participation in this race has also been a very fruitful place of activity for our Polyphony Digital team members. Starting from the preparation before departure, over 20 of our staff travel to Germany, pick up rental cars at the airport, drive through the Autobahn to the circuit, and work day and night together until the end of the final race. Hi everyone, I’m EXP.

In the beginning of May, Yamauchi san asked me whether I’d be interested in “Experiencing the Nürburgring for real, from a GT player’s point of view”. Since he made that offer to me things moved forward really quickly.

So I’m going to write on the theme, of what happens when you project the knowledge of the Nürburgring you’ve gained in a virtual world of Gran Turismo, into real life. (ReadMore)

On GT PLANET, a Gran Turismo news fansite and one of it’s biggest forums, there’s a consolidated wishlist of things wanted in Gran Turismo (http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/board/kazunori-yamauchi-qa/) and all the items listed are things I totally agree with. And the top item on the list by far, is the “improvement of sound”. (ReadMore)
