GT Academy’s Wolfgang Reip will be racing the Bathurst 12 hour race that will be held on February 6th. Expectations are high for the 2nd challenge by the NISMO Athlete Global Team in this event. Also known as “Wolfie”, he is the 2012 European GT Academy champion, and was in Japan for the NISMO Festival last year.
So what kind of race is the Bathurst 12 Hour race?
This is a 12 hour endurance race held every February at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Australia. The starting time is 5:50AM at dawn, which is pretty rare for a race even looking across the world. It’s quite a sight to see the wide GT3 machines fighting through crowds of cars on the Mount Panorama course, which contains many repeating blind corners on its steep hill section.
Because different classes of cars race at the same time, there are bound to be serious accidents. The weather can be a factor as well, and by the time of the goal, there isn’t a single car that is without a few scratches to say the least. This year Aston Martin and Bentley will also be in the race, and a tough, high level competition is expected.
Because it’s just before the start of the full motorsports season, this race is also known for being an all-star race, with world famous drivers and top drivers from the local V8 Supercars all participating in the race.
In addition to last year’s winner Mika Salo, there are former F1 drivers in the race such as David Brabham, Ivan Capelli, and Andrea Montermini.
There are also factory drivers from various manufacturers, and touring car legends such as Markus Winkelhock, Patrick Long, Oliver Gavin, Toni Vilander, Stefan Mücke, Christopher Mies and Ben Collins.
Felix Baumgartner of Red Bull’s Stratosphere fame who also participated in the Nürburgring 24 hour race last year dives again into the world of motorsports.
In Gran Turismo 6, the quick matches and time trials will be set to a combination of Mount Panorama and GT3 cars.
It would also be fun to set up endurance race rooms in the Open Lobby. Depending on tires and tuning, FIA GT3 cars can do a lap on Mount Panorama in just around 2 minutes, so you can host mini endurance races like a Bathurst 12 Lap or Bathurst 12 Minutes.
You can get the best recreation of the actual race on the Mount Panorama course, with its time and weather changes.
And on February 3, there was a surprise announcement that Alex Buncombe will not be taking part in this race. Taking his spot will be the 2013 German GT Academy winner Florian Strauss!
Don’t forget to root for Wolfgang Reip, Florian Strauss and Katumasa Chiyo through Gran Turismo!
The race will be streamed live from the official website of the Bathurst 12 hour race.
