Our travels continued from the Nürburgring 24 hour race. After departing Germany by plane to London, Heathrow, we drove an hour and a half south east to Chichester, West Sussex, , to the world famous Goodwood Festival of Speed. If you’re a GT6 player you’ll immediately recognize this as the actual location of the hill climb race in the game, to which you receive an invitation from Lord March, the host of the event.
The unique character of the Festival of Speed which started in 1993, is that it is not a show where cars are just gathered and displayed. Famous drivers and riders from all eras including the present actually drive the very machines of the past and present that have made motorsports history. It is made even more popular by how close you can come to the drivers and riders as a visitor to the event, as the paddocks are all open to visitors of the festival.
In recent years, the worlds car manufacturers have built magnificent booths that hardly appear to be temporary structures, and scene looks as if a world class motor show has jumped out onto an outdoor festival ground.
On Thursday, June 26 at 1PM, soon after opening of the festival, the full scale model of the Nissan Concept 2020 was unveiled. Full sized models are awe inspiring; and some photos were taken with the designers of the car.
Everywhere on the show grounds, there are lines of people waiting to play GT6. Many of these locations had hand written ranking boards by them, recording the fastest times for the day. The prize for some of those even included a passenger ride up the hill climb course with a professional driver.
At the VW booth was the Volkswagen GTI Vision Gran Turismo displayed on center stage. Mr. Malte Hammerbeck, the exterior designer of the Volkswagen Vision Gran Turismo talks to Yamauchi san cheerfully, but with some serious moments of thoughts in between. Wonder what they’re talking about? Interesting…
At the festival grounds are many guests, young and old. There are families pushing baby strollers, people basking in the sun on the grass, eating local organic food with a beer in one hand, generally having a good time.
And on this first night, the opening ceremony of this year’s Festival of Speed was held starting with a speech from Lord March in front of Goodwood House. In the front garden of the house where a unique sculpture of a manufacturer is placed every year, was a monument commemorating 120 years of Motorsports at Mercedes Benz. On both ends there are F1 machines of Mercedes Benz from the past and present, facing one another. The new monument will appear in the hill climb course in GT6 as well, so I hope you’ll try the hill climb yourself and check out the new monument.
